Local Oncologist would like to differ from latest guidelines on mammograms by American Cancer Society

Though the latest recommendation by the American Cancer Society has pushed back the recommended age for women to undergo their first mammogram, a local oncologist says that the guideline is not applicable for everyone.

Before coming up with the latest guidelines, it was recommended that women should get their annual mammogram between the age of 45 and 49. And, once woman turns 50 then women should undergo annual mammogram every two years.

It was only last week that the American Cancer Society has suggested that women should start their annual mammograms at the age 45, pushing back the limit by 5 years, and once every two years from 55 years of age.

US Preventive Services Task Force comes up with new guidelines on blood sugar test

The US Preventive Services Task Force has come up with new recommendations as per which doctors should ask overweight and obese people aged between 40 and 70 years to get screened for high blood sugar levels and type-2-diabetes. If found having high blood sugar then steps can be taken to bring down the level.

Dr. Michael Pignone, a task force member, said, “People with abnormal blood glucose have a higher risk for progression to [type 2] diabetes. By finding abnormal blood glucose early, you may prevent that pathway by starting lifestyle interventions early”.

Carnegie Mellon University's group of researchers has designed a method of 3-D printing for artificial tissues and organs that may prove to be a game changer for patients waiting in transplant lists.

Scientists have been using 3D printers for printing hard objects with plastic or metal layers that slowly construct the objects, for many years, but researchers have faced struggle with printing soft tissues like organs because the materials used for them can't support their own weight.

The researchers bought a consumer-level 3-D printer for the affordable amount of $1,000. Afterwards, they proceeded to hack it for printing soft materials by layering them using another specially designed type of gel.

Nearly 200 people in San Francisco have been sickened by Shigella Bacteria Outbreak

On Monday, health officials said roughly 200 people in the San Francisco area have got sickened due to an intestinal disease caused by the highly infectious Shigella bacteria. The outbreak started at a Mexican seafood restaurant 10 days ago.

In a statement, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department said that as of past Friday, the outbreak that started at the Mariscos San Juan No. 3 restaurant in San Jose on October 16 had stretched across 6 counties, infecting 182 people.

Health officials said that a number of the sickened were rushed to hospitals and admission of at least a dozen was done in intensive care units.
