Woman feels pain for the first time in life following an experiment

Scientists said that a 39-year-old woman has suffered pain for the first time ever in her life after an experiment that may open new paths of treating people with chronic pain. The intentionally anonymous woman has a condition since birth that saved her from feeling any pain, but a drug generally taken for the treatment of drug addiction made her sensitive to a hot laser beam.

For the woman, the experience was good. Scientists mentioned that the woman ‘quite enjoyed’ the meekly painful sensation of getting heated by the laser. It was a novel experience for a person who has never felt any pain since she was an infant.

Astronomers use EHT to detect Magnetic Field at Milky Way’s Black Hole

Like many other galaxies in the universe, the Milky Way also has a supermassive black hole in its center. For the first time, astronomers have succeeded in detecting magnetic fields outside the event horizon of that black hole.

Michael Johnson, a researcher from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and lead author of the research, said the new findings on magnetic fields are important. It is the first time when something about magnetic fields close to the event horizon of the black hole has been resolved, Johnson added.

Watch Pluto in Newly released Sharpest Images

A few months after a close flyby with Pluto, New Horizons spacecraft of NASA has beamed back the sharpest images of the dwarf planet which show layered craters, water ice crust, cliffs and icy mountains in detail. The US space agency has now released these highest resolution photos for space enthusiasts.

The spacecraft captured the small world’s features during a close encounter with it. The newly published pictures have a resolution of about 250–280 feet per pixel. The Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) of New Horizons took the images about 15 minutes before the probe made its closest approach with Pluto.

Japan’s Akatsuki is finally in Orbit around Venus

Five years ago, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) missed an opportunity to enter orbit at Venus, but the space agency got another chances to achieve the milestone. Now on Sunday, its Akatsuki spacecraft has successfully entered orbit around the planet.

With the achievement, the JAXA probe has become the first to operate around the second planet from the sun. The uncrewed spacecraft safely fired its auxiliary reaction control system (RCS) thrusters on Sunday for about 20 minutes and 30 seconds to slow down the probe for the planet’s gravity to capture it.

Gilead Sciences Gave Profit More Importance than Hepatitis C Cure

Ron Wyden of Oregon and his Republican wingman Chuck Grassley of Iowa recently revealed the findings of their 18-month long investigation into Gilead Sciences and its Hepatitis C Drug Sovaldi.

The investigators after examining the internal documents of more than 20,000 pages and carrying out dozens of interviews with the company’s executives found that Gilead Sciences tried to make money out of its Hepatitis C drug Sovaldi.

The report provides the most transparent look ever into pricing decisions in the modern drug business. It shows that Gilead deliberatively set price for Sovaldi after checking the basis of clinical attributes, value determinations, market research and cost of presently available products in the market.
