Post-menopausal Women with Ductal Carcinoma Can Now Use Anastrozole and Tamoxifen

Recent results of a trial revealed that oncologists can now offer post-menopausal women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) anastrozole and tamoxifen to prevent recurrence of breast cancer.

Results from two randomized trials showed that selection of any of the drug can be a good choice for the majority of patients, said researchers. The conclusions were given after studying results of placebo-controlled trials that involved around 4,200 patients.

The IBIS-II DCIS trial, conducted in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and the NRG/Oncology/NSABP B-35 trial showed that anastrozole and tamoxifen are comparably effective for preventing recurrence of both DCIS and invasive breast cancers in postmenopausal women.

Old Woman’s Body Donated For Science Found on Roadside after Falling from Mortuary Van

Police officials in northern Texas said that body of an elderly woman was found at the side of a north Texas road after it fell from the back window of the mortuary van that was carrying it to a medical research lab.

The mortuary van was carrying the body of Nell Joseph and was heading towards a Science Care facility in Colorado on Tuesday. On the way, a rear window of the van broke and the cadaver slipped out of the van and fell on the highway.

The van driver was unaware that the body has fallen from the van, said police in Denton, north of Dallas. The body was later found by an officer who was out on his routine patrol. The officer said he saw the black body bag with Joseph’s remains packed in medical-grade ice.

Researchers Discover First Ever Fossil Of Microscopic Kinorhynch Worms

A team of researchers said that they have discovered the first ever remains of microscopic kinorhynch worms which are commonly known as mud dragons. The fossils were found in China and are almost 530 million years old.

According to the researchers, the very first fossil belonging to the species was excavated in 2013 in rocks in Nanjiang, China, and later they found some more fossils in 2014.

The researchers strongly hope this historic find will help to fill a huge gap in the known fossil record of kinorhynchs, small invertebrate animals that are related to arthropods, featuring exoskeletons and segmented bodies, but not jointed legs.

New Gene Therapy Technique Helps Patients’ Body to Kill Prostate Cancer Cells

Results of a long-term clinical trial carried out by a team of researchers at Houston Methodist Hospital revealed that radiation treatment if given along with suicide gene therapy can help to fight prostate cancer.

This new technique got its name ‘suicide gene therapy’, as it causes the tumor cells in the body to self-destruct. The research showed that the patients had 20% improvement in survival with prostate cancer five years after treatment.

According to a cancer expert, before coming to any conclusion, some more and deep research is required. Prostate cancer is the most commonly found cancer in men. In the United Kingdom alone, around 41,000 individuals every year are diagnosed with prostate cancer.

CDC: Over 50% High Schools and 80% Middle Schools in the US not teaching Sex Education

US schools don’t consider sex education as an important topic, suggests a new report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More than 50% high schools and about 80%middle schools in the country are not teaching sex education topics recommended by the CDC, the report said.

The findings are enough to indicate that many US teens are not receiving important information on serious topics like HIV and STDs. Dr. Jonathan Mermin from the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention said, “We need to do a better job of giving our young people the skills and knowledge they need to protect their own health. It's important to teach students about healthy relationships and how to reduce sexual risk before they start to have sex”.
