CDC report unveils US Abortion Rate Hits Historic Lows

A new report released by National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that abortion rate in the United States is currently at record-low levels.

In 2010, the count of induced abortions was around .1 million, down from 1.6 million in 1990, according to the report. In the same year, the rate of abortion also hit record-low, with about 1.7% procedures. The rate was about 29.4 abortions per 1,000 women in 1980.

The report also showed that the abortion rate among white women was about 9.8 per 1,000 women in 2010, down from 19.7 per 1,000 women in 1990. The abortion rate was 20.3 per 1,000 women among Latinas in 2010, down from 35.1 per 1,000 women in 1990, the report stated.

While the rate was significantly down for white and Latinas, black women were still with higher rate. For them, abortion rate was 47.7 per 1,000 women, down from 67 abortions per 1,000 women in 1990, as per the report.

The report didn’t disclose abortion rate for Asian-American women. Authors of the report said, “Preliminary estimates for 2011 suggest that both the number and rate of abortions are continuing to fall”.

More than six million women in the US became pregnant in 2010. The figures for pregnancies were lower than they were since 1986, the report said. In 1990, the pregnancy rate peaked with 115.8 per 1,000 women of childbearing age, it disclosed.
