Salt warnings on restaurants’ menu in New York City was supposed to be enforced on March 1, however, National Restaurant Association requested an appellate judge to put the ruling on hold. Under salt warning, all restaurants in NYC have to print a tiny salt shaker symbol next to the menu for items, which consists more than 2,300 mg of sodium, which is the daily limit recommended by many nutritionists.

NYC is the first city in the United States to issue such a warning to combat heart diseases and stroke. A judge has earlier declared that act will be enacted on March 1 and if a restaurant is not found following the law, a fine of up to $600 will be charged. The warning sign is a tiny black triangle with an emblem of salt shaker within it.

The spotted owl was declared endangered in 1990. A new report has suggested that another species of owl is contributing to its endangered status. The native spotted owls in Pacific Northwest are being outnumbered by Invasive barred owls. In 2013, the native species had been declining by almost 4% every year since 1985. The number is further seen declining rapidly as invasive species are populating in native habitat.

The invasive barred owl, a native of the eastern United States is increasing its population in non-native lands of Pacific Northwest. They are in tough competition with native owls for food and space. They are increasingly intruding spotted owl’s habitat by pushing them out of it, for which they are named as bullies by scientists.

Last week, Google-owned Boston Dynamics released a footage showing its humanoid Atlas robot performing remarkable tasks, including opening doors, roaming over snow-covered region and holding and placing boxes at the right place.

However, some viewers might ponder over how mean humans were to Atlas. They beat the robot using a pole, pushed him down and punched a box out of its hands.

The human bullying the robot was in reality part of a practical exhibition of how Atlas reverts to environment changes and then adjusts and takes action accordingly to finish a task. However, YouTube comedy filmmakers Auralnauts visualized it as a chance of remixing the footage into the starting of a horror film.

MIT researchers have showcased the thinnest, lightest solar cells produced till date. Though its development into a commercial product could take years, the laboratory proof-of-concept has shown a latest approach to creating solar cells that may help power the next generation of handy electronic devices.

The latest process has been explained in a paper, published in the journal Organic Electronics, by MIT professor Vladimir Bulovic, research scientist Annie Wang, and doctoral student Joel Jean.

Bulovic said that the key to the new approach is to come up with the solar cell, the substrate that backs it, and an over coating to protect it from the environment, all in a single process.

Technology major Google has taken another notable step forward towards creating machines that can perform tasks better and faster than humans. Last week, Google revealed PlaNet, a neural network developed to locate the exact location where a picture was captured. According to the MIT Technology Review, the difference between this latest technology and other image location software is that it grabs information, learns as it comes across more and more pictures.

PlaNet isn’t flawless. Project leader Tobias Weyand told MIT Technology Review that the network can just localize 3.6% of the pictures at street-level accuracy and 10.1% at city-level accuracy. But, amazingly, it has already defeated humans in trial runs.
