Minke Whale safely freed
Rescuers were successful in freeing a young minke whale from a rope anchored in waters in the Bay of Fundy off New Brunswick. A whale watching vessel on Monday found the whale entangled around 13 kilometres north of Campobello Island.
Res Krebs, of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said that the 3.6 metre long calf was safely freed. Krebs explained that the whale was facing problem to breathe because of the rope. As soon as the rescuers reached at the spot, they cut the rope and freed the whale.
Naturalist Danielle Dion said that it would not be wrong to affirm that whale watching activity became a rescue operation. Dion said that they were quite disappointed as they were not able to see a whale for a long time.
But then they saw a young minke whale, the team came to know it is distressed. When they went closer, it was found to be tangled in ropes. Dion affirmed, "It was a young whale and when he was surfacing he was just bringing the front of his head, which is called his rostrum, out of the water, but he wasn't lolling the way a typical whale did".
As they went closer, they saw the line in the water. The team saw the rope around the lower jaw of the minke whale. The rope could be of lobster gear. The whale was struggling to come to the surface to breathe.
