‘Corpse Flower’ to Bloom in a day or two
In a day or two, a titan arum is expected to bloom at Cambridge University Botanic Garden. The garden officials said that it is going to bloom for the first time a decade. The scent of the flower is a 'stench of rotting flesh'.
Last time, titan arum bloomed in 2004 and around 10,000 people came to see it. This time also, the garden officials have been expecting to witness thousands of people coming to the garden over the next two days to see and smell the 'rare corpse flower'.
The bloom lasts for a few days. Therefore, people who want to see this rare flower have to come within few days. As per experts, it emits smell to attract pollinators, the carrion beetle. Once the flower blooms then the garden will remain open till late to allow visitors to see the flower.
"Amorphophallus titanum is a very unusual plant. It lives mostly in an underground tuber which every year puts out one gigantic leaf several metres tall that lasts for the growing season", said Prof Beverley Glover, director of the garden.
Glover said that the flower is around two metres across, the biggest single flower known in the world. Garden spokeswoman Juliet Day said that the flower is expected to be between 150 and 170 cm.
The Botanic Garden has two titan arum plants. This flower, which has been at the garden for around 10 years, will be blooming for the first time. Its smell is described as the 'most appalling scent of rotting flesh and decay'.
