NASA’s Newly Released Images of Pluto and Charon showcase some interesting facts

NASA’s New Horizons is moving towards the icy planet Pluto. On Thursday, NASA shared images of Pluto and its largest moon. The images helped revealing the new details of the surface of Pluto and Charon.

NASA said that there is not much common in Pluto and its moon, Charon. If there is any common thing between these two celestial bodies then it’s the way they are living in harmony for so many years. At one place, Pluto boasts of ‘exotic ices’ ranging from nitrogen to carbon monoxide. On the other hand, Charon carried frozen water and ammonia.

On July 14, New Horizons will pass by the planet. As the spacecraft is getting closer to Pluto, it has been capturing amazing images revealing new details of the planet and its largest moon. NASA has compared both the celestial bodies to ‘a pair of figure skaters clasping hands’.

The images may break the common notions about the planet, which show Pluto’s surface having a high-contrast blend of bright and dark features. Charon is covered with grey. NASA said that Pluto and Charon have color differences because of different atmospheres. Charon does not have any atmosphere and as mentioned above, it is just made of frozen water and ammonia compounds.

New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern said, “These two objects have been together for billions of years, in the same orbit, but they are totally different”.
