Extremely Rare Humpback White whale ‘Migaloo’ spotted in New Zealand
A white whale was seen over the weekend in the Cook Strait. It led to speculations that an albino humpback has been discovered, but when the images were compared then it was found that the whale was in fact Migaloo.
Southern Cross University's professor Peter Harrison was given the responsibility to compare the images and reach at the conclusion. "By comparing the shape of the dorsal fin it does indeed appear that the white whale spotted through the Cook Strait in New Zealand is in fact Migaloo", affirmed Harrison.
Harrison said that it is quite an exciting discovery as it is the first time that Migaloo has been seen in New Zealand waters. Generally, Migaloo comes through along the east coast. But now, it would take him bit longer to reach at the east coast.
This is yet another great record of Migaloo. Also, it shall be noted that there is nothing to worry about for Migaloo. In addition, a lot of steps are now being taken to save whales. Programs have been started in New Zealand that ban whaling. In the nation, whaling is banned since 1964.
As per conservation department, there is a significant rise in number of whales in comparison to last year. In three weeks, there have been 125 sighting. In 2014, there were 92 sightings in total. Nadine Bott, whale survey project leader said that they keep a track on whale recovery.
