Grizzly Bear spotted wandering on grounds around Seal River Lodge

A YouTube video of a visit paid by a grizzly bear in Churchill has gone viral on internet. Staff at Churchill Wild’s Seal River Lodge, 60 km north of Churchill, Manitoba, was greeted by a grizzly bear in the morning.

On Friday, June 19, 2015, at 5:30 am, the grizzly bear was seen wandering the grounds around Seal River Lodge. Heidi den Haan, the assistant director of the Churchill Northern Studies Centre on Hudson Bay, was of the view, “One of the researchers phoned here a little while ago and he was extremely excited. Just on a cursory view he thought it might be a female but they have to confirm that”.

For now, it is not sure as to whether the bear is male or female, but one thing is sure that it is singular. In addition, a white polar bear paid a visit in the evening at the time when the staff was making preparations for their first polar bear safari of the season.

It is not a rare thing for the Churchill Wild team to see polar bears, but seeing grizzly bear is something different. Mike Reimer, co-owner of Churchill Wild, said they have been seeing grizzly bears on and off around Seal River for the last 10 years.

“But this is definitely the first time we’ve ever photographed or had one so close to one of the lodges. The grizzly bears are certainly expanding their territory south into Manitoba and we're very lucky to be one of the beneficiaries”, said Reimer.
