Sexist Comment leaves British Biologist ‘hung out to dry’
In the present world where women's liberation movements galore, leaving no stone unturned to fight for the cause of equality of women, you need to be ardently cautious before passing a sexist comment. This is what the beleaguered British biologist Tim Hunt realized but too late.
The British biologist, Tim Hunt claims that he has been 'hung out to dry' by his various employers after he made a passing sexist remark at a conference in Seoul, South Korea.
Hunt made the remark on a lunch for female journalists at this conference. Describing himself as a 'chauvinistic pig', Hunt commented, "Let me tell you about my trouble with girls. Three things happen when they are in the lab: you fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticize them, they cry". Hunt further added that he was in favour of 'single-sex labs'.
However, the 72-year-old Nobel laureate was soon to know that the trouble he was citing was going to cause a breach of his peace. Not only he had to forcefully resign from his university that announced his resignation on its website, he also received a stand down from the European Research Council.
Hunt and his wife, Mary Collins who is a senior immunologist have stated in an interview with the Observer that their comments were intended to be funny and the stern reaction was uncalled for and is not commensurate with the crime.
The perplexed Hunt said that he has become toxic! Hunt added that he has been 'hung to dry' by academic institutes who have not even bothered to know his side of affairs.
Look before you tread, think before u comment!
