Girl receives new prosthetic arm from actor of her favorite movie franchise ‘Dolphin Tale’
A 10-year-old girl, who was born without her right arm, received a 3D-printed bionic limb from a student-led non-profit at the University of Central Florida.
Annika Emmert received the new 3D-printed appendage by an actor from her favorite movie franchise ‘Dolphin Tale’.
Actor Cozi Zuehlsdorff surprised her with her new limb during a family vacation to Clearwater Maritime Aquarium in Clearwater, Florida.
Emmert also spent time with Winter the dolphin, who has worn prosthetic tails since getting entangled in a crab trap line at just three months old.
Emmert was born without part of her right forearm. Over the years, she has worn multiple prosthetics. However, they haven't always made for effortless movement or maximum comfort.
Emmert's new arm measures about 14 inches (35 centimeters) in length and weighs less than 3 pounds. It has been made by Limbitless Solutions, an Orlando-based nonprofit run and staffed by University of Central Florida engineering students. The organization engineers low-cost customized 3D-printed bionic limbs for children with disabilities.
It took about 40 hours to print Annika's arm. Each piece is modular and when Annika grows, she'll get upgrades in the form of larger parts.
Albert Manero, Limbitless' executive director, said, “That's the beauty of 3-D printing. You can just print a new, longer finger, a new, longer forearm, and we can keep the electronics the same”.
Limbitless paired with Robert Downey Jr. earlier this year to present a new 3D-printed bionic Iron Man appendage to a seven-year-old fan born with a partially developed right arm.
