Great White Shark on Twitter!
An organization, which has been monitoring the species of large lamniform shark, also known as great white shark, found that one of the creatures has started gaining attention on social media. According to the organization, it has been enjoying the creature’s popularity. There is a fake account of the 3,500-pound great white shark on micro-blogging website twitter.
The account has been named ‘Mary Lee the shark’. In addition, the account has more than 52.3 thousands followers. As per the reports, the account receives a number of new followers due to its playful updates and witty replies as the real life shark cruises up and down the East Coast. It provides the real movement of the creature online and in real time.
The great white shark, which was tagged off the coast of Cape Cod, is among a number of sharks that have been tagged and monitored by a Utah-based organization, OCEARCH. As per the organization, it has been tracking the creatures since 2007.
According to reports, the fake Twitter account is not affiliated with the organization. But OCEARCH expedition leader Chris Fischer said that the organization is happy to know that the creature has got so much of attention on the social media. Fischer had named the shark ‘Mary Lee’ after his mother.
As per the reports, OCEARCH has now joined the movement. The organization has started official Twitter handles for two other sharks that are monitored by it off the East Coast. The twitter accounts for both the sharks are @Shark_Katharine and @RockStarLydia.
The operator of that fake account identified themselves as a daily newspaper reporter who lives on the East Coast. While expressing happiness about the account getting attention, the operator wrote, “The best part is that @MaryLeeShark plays a role in helping to replace fear with facts by retweeting and commenting on @OCEARCH tweets. I try to be respectful of the important work OCEARCH does and have fun at the same time”.
