San Francisco Bay Area shook by earthquake

According to officials, people in the San Francisco Bay Area were shocked when they realized that the ground was shaking as a result of five low intensity earthquakes on Sunday. According to scientists, at about 2:15 pm local time Sunday, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit near Concord, around 30 miles northeast of downtown San Francisco.

As per the US Geological Survey, the tremors were felt by much of the Bay Area; however experts described the movement as a quick jolt. A 2.5-magnitude tremor hit that same area nearly 10 minutes earlier, which was hit by quakes measured at magnitudes of 2.7, 2.4 and 1.6 in the next 45 minutes.

The seismic events created tremors, which shook buildings and homes, typically in the East Bay region, west of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge. However, in the beginning, there have been no reports of injuries or damage. The earthquakes were measured about nine miles underground by the USGS.

According to USGS Seismologist Dr. David Schwartz, "A four's just sort of a nice little warning that you're dealing with something that has the potential to be bigger".

Thousands of Bay Area residents reported that they felt tremors. They reported it to the USGS's reporting website and also wrote of the earthquake on social media channels. A Bay Area resident tweeted, 'Bay Area update: we recently had a baby earthquake in concord (I'm scared)'.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, it went into 'earthquake mode' for a short time on Sunday morning; they performed some safety checks and surveys for almost 500 square miles around the city. There were no reports of any harm or damage.
