Samantha Cristoforetti became first person in space to sip from freshly-made cup of coffee
The first person in space to sip from a freshly made cup of coffee is Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti. Cristoforetti, an Italian national and European Space Agency astronaut, became the first person to use the International Space Station's newly-installed espresso machine.
The commercially-developed coffee machine launched with other cargo and supplies on a SpaceX Dragon capsule last month. As per experts, the machine is the first such device that designed for use in microgravity.
By making use of some of their off duty time, Cristoforetti and Kelly set up the ISSpresso on a wall in the station's Unity node. The experts said that the microwave-sized box utilizes capsules, like concept to a Keurig machine, to brew the caffeinated beverage.
Retailer Lavazza and Argotec developed the ISSpresso that is meant to be more than just an appliance. The machine also contributes to the study of fluid dynamics in space. Argotec officials said that making coffee in space is not easy. Argotec officials said that this is the first capsule espresso machine that has capability to work in the extreme conditions in space.
"Once the coffee has been 'poured,' a new system cleans the final section of the hydraulic circuit and, at the same time, generates a small pressure difference in the special pouch used as a space 'espresso cup,' so that when the straw is inserted, all the aroma of the coffee is released", said the company's.
According to the company's, the pouch is made from a transparent material that makes it feasible to observe the cream directly as part of the fluid dynamic experiment being carried out and to examine the behavior in space of liquids at high pressure and temperature.
