Wild lynx will be brought back to UK
Wild lynx had disappeared from Britain more than 1,300 years ago, but now, as per the plans, the animal could be brought back to the region. The Lynx UK Trust has planned to bring back the predator to three parts of the United Kingdom. As per the trust, the big cats will be back for an initial five-year trial.
The trust stated that its ultimate aim is to have hundreds of lynx in the countryside. According to reports, farmers’ concerns could be an obstacle for the trust. In addition, there are also concerns that lynx could be danger to humans. The trust will start the trial by bringing back four to six lynx. Every animal will wear radio tracking devices.
The Trust has also been is looking at locations across the UK where the animal could be reintroduced into the wild.
The consultation could take several months and after its completion, members of the trust will file a formal application with Natural England and Scottish Natural Heritage. Lynx Trust’s Dr Paul O'Donoghue, chief scientific specialist, said that Lynx is a beautiful cat, which will fit beautifully into the United Kingdom environment.
O'Donoghue said that it is an extremely shy animal which has never attacked a human anywhere they live. The animal’s preferred prey is deer, which is available in the UK in huge amount, the chief scientific specialist added.
There were concerns raised by some sheep farmers that wild lynx could be dangerous for their sheep. O'Donoghue said, “Extensive research from Europe shows that lynx very rarely predate on sheep anywhere they live, and prefer the hiding places of remote forestry to the open environment of farms or sheep moors”.
According to the reports, the wild lynx had disappeared from the United Kingdom after being hunted by humans.
