Blue Bell Creameries announces massive recall due to Listeria contamination risk

For weeks, Blue Bell Creameries has been issuing recalls for its products due to listeria contamination risk. On Monday, the company has announced that it is recalling its complete products ranging from ice cream, frozen yoghurt, sherbet and other frozen snacks.

The recall has been announced because the products could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. “Today's decision was the result of findings from an enhanced sampling program initiated by Blue Bell which revealed that Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream half gallons produced on March 17, 2015, and March 27, 2015, contained the bacteria”, said the company.

Till now, the company has found five cases of Listeria in Kansas and three cases in Texas. Blue Bell CEO and President Paul Kruse said that they are committed to do 100% right thing. Therefore, the best way to achieve the same is to recall all the products from the market.

The decision will remain the same till the time they are not sure that all the products are safe. Kruse said that they are upset about the situation and also apologize to their loyal customers.

Health experts shared valuable information about Listeria monocytogenes. They were of the view that it can cause serious and sometimes, fatal infections in young children, elderly and weak people. Every year, in America around 1,600 people become quite ill with Listeria and around 16% of the cases result into death.

Some people may suffer from only short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. In severe cases, Listeria can cause miscarriages and still births. Over the past year, Listeria outbreak resulted into the death of three Kansas people.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment said in March that these deaths might have been linked to Blue Bell products.
