New FWS plan to deal with declining population of Polar Bears
A government report has raised concerns by unveiling that polar bears' population has been declining alarmingly. There is a probability that global warming could make polar bear an extinct species. Therefore, the government is coming up with a recovery plane for the species.
The report has stated that around a third of all polar bears could face the risk of extinction due to greenhouse gas emissions. Rebecca Noblin, Alaska director for the Center for Biological Diversity, said, "There are other steps we can take to slow the decline of polar bears, but in the long run, the only way to save polar bears in the Arctic is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions".
Experts have explained that due to global warming, Arctic waters are heating up making sea ice to melt. Sea ice is very important for polar bears, as they act as an important hunting ground for polar bears. Their disappearance could force bears to come to land in the search of food.
But the researchers said that food sources on land are limited. It is believed that polar bear population will be able to manage things in summer months. Study's lead author Todd Atwood said that other threats affecting bears population include trans-Arctic shipping, oil and gas exploration, and disease and contaminants.
To know how emissions will affect polar bears in the coming time, the researchers have used two models. In the first model, emissions remained on the current path leading to unabated global warming. In this scenario, sea ice melt happened and other climate-change policies led to rapid loss of polar bear population by 2025.
In the second model, emissions were controlled and warming stabilization was achieved. In this case, global warming effects started to take place 25 years later.
