NASA selects J. P. Donovan Construction to prepare launch structure for SLS
P. Donovan Construction Inc., of Rockledge, Florida, will start working at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to prepare ground structures for launch of NASA’s next generation rocket and spacecraft to Mars and other deep space destinations. NASA has selected the contractor to install an integrate ground support equipment onto the existing Mobile Launcher.
This will help the agency modify the structure with systems necessary to assemble, process and launch its integrated Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft.
A firm, fixed-price contract, ‘The Ground Systems Development and Operations (GSDO) Mobile Launcher Ground Support Equipment Installation’, extends for 455 calendar days. The maximum value associated with it is $45.8 million.
Core Electric of Melbourne, Florida; MDI Services, LLC of Orlando, Florida; and Bragg Crane and Rigging of Long Beach, California, are other important subcontractors.
GSDO will help prepare Kennedy to enable processing and launching of the next generation vehicles and spacecraft meant to help NASA meet its goals set for space exploration.
Program personnel have already begun with developing the necessary ground systems to achieve this transformation. They are also refurbishing and upgrading infrastructure and facilities to withstand tomorrow’s requirements.
Flexibility needs to be considered while making this modernization effort so as to accommodate a multitude of government, commercial and other customers.
