Money woes prevent Pak exhibitors from obtaining SRK’s new film’s rights
Islamabad, Dec 14 : Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan's fans in Pakistan are in for a disappointment, as exhibitors and distributor in the country have not obtained screening rights for his latest film `Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' owning to lack of funds.
The film, starring SRK and a newcomer, was to be simultaneously released in India and Pakistan. However, the Pakistani film exhibitors and distributor were unable to obtain the rights.
Generally, the cost to gain the rights to exhibit an Indian movie is around Rs 7 million, which is earned back by the movie distributor and exhibitors within the first week, reports the Daily Times.
However, with this movie, the film had an asking price of Rs 60 million, which was too high to pay for any Pakistani exhibitor. Although the price was later reduced to Rs 20 million, the exhibitors continued to resist it and the movie's release was eventually cancelled in Pakistan.
Pakistan Cinema Management Association Chairman Qaiser Sanaullah Khan told Daily Times that Indian movies usually perform very well in Pakistan. `Singh is King', `Race'; `Awarapun'; and `Jannat' have all performed very well, he said.
"Shahrukh Khan is a big star with a great market value, but no exhibitor was willing to take the risk to obtain the rights to the movie at such a high cost," he added. (ANI)
