Los Angeles to cut down dead or dying trees

According to Los Angeles officials, it is not possible to irrigate all trees of the city for the reason there is not sufficient water to do that. As a result of this, they have taken a decision to chop down approximately 14,000 dead or dying trees affected by the drought.

Officials have already controlled use of water in the city as a result of drought, however the drought is still affecting the Golden State adversely. The flora in the city was affected the most by the drought. It resulted in the loss of cover vegetation, wildflowers and the sustainability, and then it also started affecting trees.

According to Laura Bauernfeind, a ground maintenance supervisor for the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, the particular reason behind the death of trees is not known, but drought has definitely contributed a lot to this.

However, Kirsten Fisher, an assistant professor of biology at California State University in Los Angeles, said that there could be several adverse impacts of removal of trees on local ecosystems.

According to Fisher, if trees are removed and are not replaced by other ones, many other problems will emerge. She added, “But it also reduces habitat for wild animals, so birds that are migrating through or other animals that rely on trees for shelter and food will not have those trees anymore. So of course, they will be eliminated".

A report by US Department of Agriculture showed that the tree mortality rate has more than doubled from the year earlier.
