Law Minister condemns Gopalaswami''s behavior

Law Minister condemns Gopalaswami''s behaviorNew Delhi, Feb 2 : Law Minister H R Bhardwaj has critisised Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami for his insistence on removal of his colleague Navin Chawla.

He warned the CEC not to act like a "political boss" and concentrate on his duties in the Election Commission.

Bharadwaj said that he has to look into the details of the matter.

Asked if the government had taken any decision on the Chief Election Commissioner''s recommendation to remove Chawla, he said, "When a decision is taken, we will inform you."

The Law Minister said that the Election Commission has been facing controversies ever since Chawla was appointed to the post of election commissioner.

In 2006, BJP submitted a petition to President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam seeking the removal of Chawla from his office on the allegation that he took money from the Congress politicians for his family trust.

Gopalaswami has said that his adverse recommendation, which comes a year after BJP''s complaint, is based on his own experience and observation of Chawla''s work as Election Commissioner.

Bhardwaj said that the Election Commission''s role is to prepare for the elections and not to settle personal scores.

In the affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, the CEC has claimed that he has the suo motu right (where an agency acts on its own cognizance) to recommend the removal of an Election Commissioner. (ANI)
