Kochi, Nov. 9 : V. T. Jolly, a school dropout, in Kochi has acquired a huge collection of discarded pens. Jolly’s passion started three years ago, and till date, he has collected 2,608 pens of over 1050 varieties.
Though Jolly has failed to matriculate, his is passionate about collecting pens. His passion for discarded pens began at the age of 15.
He wasn’t well off to buy new pens of different varieties so he opted to collect used or thrown away pens from wherever he could.
He says this hobby started while painting a house. He noticed a few used pens lying in a dustbin. With the owners’ permission, he took them and then started his collection.
"I used to collect it at times from people’s dustbins while going for painting work. So, I have a good collection and thought of keeping a record of all I have,” Jolly said.
“It’s been three years now that I got serious to it, though I was not financially sound but always wanted to do something special in life. So, I started asking friends and relatives not to throw away and just keep it for me,” said Jolly, who is now in his thirties.
He has a special collection of pens by famous personalities, teachers, professors, charted accountants and engineers who presented it to him after using it for years. For Jolly, the collection is precious.
Jolly has maintained a proper record of his pens, including the date, model, make and the country to which the pen belongs. As per his records, he has pens from 16 countries including Jerusalem, USA, Germany and France.
Jolly’s unique collection includes pen with a golden crown, a perfume spraying pen, pens with cigarette lighters, tiny ones, ink filing and roller pens, double sided pens. You name it, and he has it.
Jolly today feels like putting his huge pen collection on public display.
"I think of conducting an exhibition as I have variety that are now not seen these days. I want the younger generation to see. I have a plan to enter it into the world records for which I am collecting as much as I can and wish to get it from famous people", said Jolly.
To ensure that all pens should not get mixed with other brands or models, Jolly has made separate boxes each of them labeled. (ANI)
