Johnson County ready for kid-friendly monarch butterfly tagging event

Johnson County is all set to celebrate a kid-friendly monarch butterfly tagging event on September 12th from 1 pm until 3. The Conservation Education Center in F.W. Kent Park located at 2048 HWY 6 N.W. in Oxford is the venue fixed as the place to celebrate the event.

Participants will get an amazing opportunity to tag butterflies as they come through the park. There is no fees to be paid to attend the event, even no registration is required; it's only your presence than matter the most.

As part of a tag and release program that tracks migration of monarch butterflies, Assiniboine Park Zoo released monarch butterflies on Wednesday. The butterflies were released by the zoo from the Shirley Richardson Butterfly Garden after 1:30 pm.

The upcoming tagging event marks the fifth year in the row. Researchers will get a great help through the event to keep a track on the butterflies' migration to Mexico for the winter.

The zoo is of a firm belief that the program plays a significant role in conserving and educating people about monarch butterflies.

A petition with more than 38,000 signatures is beseeching the US Fish & Wildlife halls of science to provide protection for the monarch butterfly. People are making efforts to ensure that the population of monarch butterflies must no decline to such an extent that they ultimately end up on the Endangered Species List.

The tagging event will help provide deep insight into the lifestyle of monarch butterflies so that researchers can devise ways to better their plight.
