Japanese Robot battles Guinness Record Holder in Samurai Swordsmanship

The battle between tradition and technology ensues in a video that has gone viral showing a samurai robot challenging the human world champion sword master, stroke by stroke.

The rich samurai tradition of Japan has been showcased under dual heads. The legend of the ancient Japanese samurai legacy, the Guinness World Record holder, Isao Machii is seen rivaling a Japanese robotic genius, a bot swordsman dubbed as Yaskawa Motoman MH-24.

The samurai robot has been developed by the Japanese robotics company named Yaskawa Electric Corporation. Motoman MH-24 robot is a precision industrial and medical bot that possess exceptional motor control qualities. This robot has been wielded with a katana which is a traditional curved Japanese sword used by samurai.

The video shows Motoman MH-24 matching Machii phenomenally, performing numerous cuts with a sword, cutting into flowers, fruit and mats. Both are then seen competing for 1,000 cuts in sequence, following which Machii looks drained while the Robot is as fresh as was at the start of the match.

The researchers are treading cautiously and taking all the necessary precautions. They have worked through several months to program the robot and refine its movements to mimic Machii.

The technicians have also fitted Machii with a cutting-edge 3-D motion detection suit that even records Machii's individual breaths. Moreover, the technicians adjusting the robot are required to wear full body armor and helmets at all times.

However, the extraordinary competency of the robots has raised fears of the dire consequences that misuses of this technology overload could cause.
