Israel begins Natural gas production at Tamar fieldThe production of Natural gas has begun at Tamar field and the gas is expected to reach Israel's shores on Sunday after flowing through nearly 200 kilometers of pipelines.

The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the government of Israel said that the production will address the shortage of natural gas in the country. It is believed that the supply of natural gas from Tamar will be partial and full capacity will only be restored after a few weeks. The Tamar field was discovered in the year 2009 and it has an estimated 9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Minister of Energy and Water Resources Silvan Shalom described the occasion as a "historic moment". He said that as the country was celebrating the holiday of freedom, it also marked achieving energy independence through the gas field. The Tamar field is offshore from Haifa and the gas from the field will flow through 160 kilometers ofpipes and then another 24 kilometers more of pipesto arrive at Ashdod through the Yam Tethys field.

The Tamar field is owned jointly by various firms including Delek Group, which has a stake of 31.35 per cent through subsidiaries, Noble Energy that owns 36 per cent, Isramco owns 28.7 per cent and Alon Natural Gas Exploration, which owns 4 per cent.
