India saves an old patient
A 71 year old denied of surgery in the US, was successfully operated in India.
Mohammad Walji, an old veteran was suffering from advanced stage of Parkinson's disease. The worsening condition of the patient involved agonizing body pains and severe motor fluctuations.
He was cured in Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai. It was reported that the man was deprived of medical surgery in the US, as the law does not allow operation of people over the age of 65.
His condition was immediately diagnosed in India and instant action was taken.
Walji had to undergo a bilateral sub-thalamic-nucleus- deep-brain-stimulation surgery. It took 15 hours to get it done.
According to neurosurgeon, Dr. Paresh Doshi, the operation involved introduction of electric current to block irregular brain signals. He further added, "We implant a battery-operated neurotransmitter attached to a pacemaker-like wire with an electrode at the tip. This wire is inserted under the skin and placed through a small hole in the skull. The same wire is used to deliver electrical impulses in the brain."
