HINDRAF members to be charged
Kuala Lumpur, Feb. 18: Eight Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) supporters arrested for participating in an illegal gathering in the city have been remanded until today.
The eight, including a woman, were among nine detained during the rally on Saturday. Another woman arrested was released yesterday.
The New Strait Times quoted city police chief Datuk Muhammad Sabtu Osman as saying that the eight could be charged with participating in an illegal assembly.
Upon conviction, they can be jailed up to two years or asked to pay a maximum fine of RM10, 000, or both.
The demonstrators had planned to gather in front of Parliament House to hand over a memorandum concerning the Indian community, but it was thwarted by the police. (ANI)
