Geological Features of Ceres named after Agricultural Gods and Goddesses
On July 28, NASA has released beautiful maps of Ceres, which is present in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Since March, NASA's Dwarf spacecraft has been examining it. In the maps different colors have been used to show the differences of heights of various craters and peaks present on Ceres.
It has been unveiled that geological features on dwarf planet Ceres have been named after agricultural Gods and Goddesses. NASA asks people to submit name submissions. In this case also NASA opened calls for submissions to help name features on Pluto and its orbiting bodies.
International Astronomical Union (IAU) in Paris decides the rules for naming such objects. In this particular case, as dwarf planet Ceres was a Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility, so the IAU decided that the names of its features would be from 'spirits and deities relating to agriculture from a variety of cultures'.
In the case of Charon, who was the ferryman and took souls across the river Styx, names of Pluto's moon Charon were from mythical and fictional stories of travel and exploration. The newly released maps also show the names of the features that have been approved by the IAU.
To cite few examples, a 20-mile-wide crater has been named Haulani, a Hawaiian plant goddess; a 75-mile-wide and 3-mile deep crater has been named after Dantu, a Ghanaian God associated with planting of corn.
