Fugitive arrested while placing bet in Philippines biggest lotteryManila  - A fugitive, wanted for allegedly raping his housemaid more than a year ago, was arrested in an eastern city while placing a bet in the Philippines biggest lottery jackpot ever, a police report said Saturday.

The report said Ariel Ayque, 52, was arrested late Friday while placing his bet in a lottery outlet in Naga City, 200 kilometres south-east of Manila.

Ayque was accused of raping his housemaid in November 2007 and a local judge issued a warrant for his arrest in March 2008, it said.

Police said Vu Thi Kim Anh, 22, a fourth-year student at Hanoi Pedagogical University, confessed to murdering Nguyen Tien Chinh, 42, as the two sat in his parked Lexus sports utility vehicle.

"[Anh's] action was partially caused by the victim's misconduct," said Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Duc Chung, head of the Hanoi Investigative Police.

Hostage-taker with starting gun arrested at China airport Beijing  - Airport police in the south-western Chinese city of Chengdu overpowered a man who was armed with a starting pistol and had taken a woman hostage near a security counter, state media said on Friday.

The police and security officers seized the 23-year-old man after he fired two shots into the air and grabbed the woman at Chengdu's Shuangliu International Airport on Thursday morning, the official Xinhua news agency quoted police as saying.

The police quickly overpowered the man and freed the woman uninjured, the agency said.

Two men quizzed over "poison dart" plot at Hong Kong racecourse Hong Kong  - Two men were questioned Friday by police in Hong Kong in connection with a plot to rig big money races by shooting poison darts at horses.

The men were arrested Thursday evening after being seen acting suspiciously by security guards on a public jogging track that goes around the Happy Valley racecourse.

20 people arrested in drug raids in Philippines Manila  - Twenty people were arrested Thursday in anti-drug operations in a town and a city outside the Philippine capital, a regional police chief said.

Twelve suspected drug dealers and users were arrested in separate raids in the resort town of Pagsanjan in Laguna province, 40 kilometres south of Manila, Chief Superintendent Perfecto Palad said.

Palad said another eight suspected drug dealers and users were arrested in near-simultaneous raids in the nearby city of San Pablo.
