Fishermen catch 600-pound mako shark off Florida coast
According to a Florida fisherman, a 600-pound mako shark was caught by him and his crew while fishing off the coast in Panama City Beach. On Friday night, Matt Pemberton from the Off the Beach Shark Fishing group and his crew saw a mako shark weighing over 600 pounds.
Pemberton said that catching the fish was a long fight and they got really tired. It took an hour and a half later to catch the fish. Seven men made efforts to catch the 10-foot shark.
“It started off as a down trip really and we started fishing last night and hooked into that shark. It was pretty impressive I couldn't believe it. It just blew my mind to land something that big. I never expected anything like that”, said tourist Douglas Harlan, who was among the seven people who caught the shark.
Pemberton said catching fish in an ocean is much different from catching it in a river or a lake. He said he was raised catching fish and now he has reached a level where he’s catching a shark.
According to Harlan, who is from Indiana, crappie fishing in Indiana will not be like what he did at the coast in Panama City Beach. He added that he’ll come back to the place to catch a bigger fish. Pemberton said it is really good to catch a shark, when one is just thinking of doing that. He added that there are many bigger things in the ocean, but it’s difficult to land a whale.
According to the Florida Museum of Natural History, these sharks grow to an average 135-300 pounds.
