Firefighter Injured in Boat Fire in Newport Beach marina
Four agencies responded to morning boat fire in a Newport Beach marina. Newport Beach; Costa Mesa fire departments; Harbor Patrol and the US Coast Guard responded after 8.30am to reports to boat fire.
The fire incident took place in a public marina near 19th Street and West Bay Avenue. Newport Beach police Sgt. Keith Krallman said that two people were present on a docked fishing boat when the fire started.
But they were lucky enough to come ashore before any of the two got injured. A fisherman was taken to hospital for leg injury and was later released. As soon as the fire report came, 20 firefighters extinguished the blaze within 15 minutes. The boat got little damaged.
A preliminary investigation is also taking place. It has been suspected that around 15 to 30 gallons of gasoline might have entered into water due to the fire. Local Coast Guard officials have added floating barriers in water so that contamination can be avoided.
For now, the exact reason behind the blaze is not known. And damage estimate is also not easily available. During the act of extinguishing fire, a firefighter has suffered minor injuries. “One fireman sustained minor injuries to his lower legs. He was treated at a local hospital and released back to duty”, said Krallman.
