Experts looking into possible reasons of Death of Minke Whale
Experts from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research & Preservation are trying to know the reasons that could have led to the death of a whale found dead on Long Island Beach. The 2,000 pound whale was found beached on July 8.
Almost 12 feet long whale's dead body scared many people at the Robert Moses State Park. Some of the swimmers have got so scared that they have said that they will hesitate to enter the water next time.
The investigation is taking place. Experts have found wounds on the whale, which as per researchers, could be shark bites. For now, it is not known as whether or not those bites are the reason of the death. In addition to shark bites, other possible reasons behind the whale's death could be a fast-moving ship or a severe disease.
Ship could be the reason as six whales were spotted on Long Island shores between Coney Island and West Hampton this year and four of them died after being hit by a ship. Many biologists have also said that starvation could also be the reason. After necropsy is done, the whale will be buried on the beach.
Experts said that minke whales are quite common in the waters near Long Island. Owing to their quick movements, they are difficult to be spotted. Researchers said that the incident should not cause panic among people as similar incidents have taken place in the past well.
It is expected that the necropsy will confirm what the exact reason behind the animal's death was.
