Elon Musk Donates Millions to Research Team Working To Keep AI Robust and Beneficial
According to reports, Elon Musk has been known for the donations he has made in the field of science. Now Elon Musk donated millions to the Future of Life Institute and the organization is further funding a research group working to keep Artificial Intelligence (AI) 'robust and beneficial'.
The institute announced in this week that it will be issuing grants to 37 different research teams, which have been selected from a list of around 300 applicants. The selected teams will be working on some tough AI issues and will study them from different angles.
The issues would include teaching AI to learn what humans want, aligning robots' interests with our own, and keeping AI completely under human control.
The entire list of the grant winners including the descriptions of their projects has been made available online. The summary of some of the grants highlighted by the institute include, a project by Benja Fallenstein at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute. The project would aim on how to keep the interests of super intelligent systems aligned with human values.
Another is a project by Manuela Veloso from Carnegie Mellon University. This project would focus on making Ai systems explain their decisions to humans. It has been said that about $7 million will be divided among the research teams, coming from Musk and the Open Philanthropy Project.
Most of these projects will start their work from this September, and the institute will keep on providing them finding for up to three years.
The remaining $4 million will be distributed later on, after the institute determines which areas of research appear to be the most promising.
Future of Life Institute president Max Tegmark, said, "The danger with the Terminator scenario isn't that it will happen, but that it distracts from the real issues posed by future AI. We're staying focused, and the 37 teams supported by today's grants should help solve such real issues".
