Eight-month practice to live on Mars finishes
Six aspiring astronauts have completed their practice of living on Mars. They all were working in a solar-powered space station replica to learn about how to live in conditions available on Mars. They have been living in a harsh and isolated setting like Mars imitated by the rocky slopes of Mauna Loa, dormant volcano in Hawaii.
As per Mirror, the scientists participated in the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS), a trial exercise to simulate living conditions on the Red Planet. Crew members wore spacesuits particularly during mock Mars explorations in the volcano; it was related to the training research.
According to a report by Washington Post, the team was the second out of the three missions’ studies of NASA that have been planned to observe human performance and team cohesion during the 100 million-mile prolonged trip to Mars. Martha Lenio is the head of the crew consisting of three men and three women living together in what was imitated to be a space station on Mars.
They had a 20-minute delay of message from the Earth base camp, which simulated the estimated travel time of communication signals between Earth and Mars.
The team used ‘glorified closets’ as their bedrooms and consumed freeze-dried food in plastic packets. And their toilets also didn't flush. According to Lenio, "It was a bit overwhelming at first. We didn't really know where to look or what to say. Having all these people around is a bit difficult".
