East Asian Games met with apathy in host territory Hong Kong

East Asian Games met with apathy in host territory Hong Kong Hong Kong - Hong Kong is spending millions of US dollars hosting the 2009 East Asian Games but more than one in three people in the city knows nothing about the event, a survey found Friday.

Thirty-five per cent of people interviewed had no idea their city was host for the games in December - and when informed of the event, the same percentage expressed a complete lack of interest.

Only one quarter of the 650 people surveyed by the Hong Kong Civic Party felt the government had done enough to promote the sporting event and only 40 per cent said they would attend.

A Hong Kong government spokesman said a city-wide promotion of the games would gather pace as the year goes on with DVDs sent out to schools and shopping malls.

The 2009 event is the fifth East Asian Games. The games are held every four years and have previously been held in Shanghai, Busan in South Korea, Osaka in Japan and Macau. (dpa)
