Drones and automatic cameras have Negative Effect on Wildlife: Study
These days, drones are being used for varied purposes and they can be helpful in situations when regular monitoring in required. Researchers and conservationists have often used drones to keep tabs on threats posed to biodiversity and to discourage poaching acts. But a new research has found that the presence of drones imposes negative effect on wildlife.
Drones have been found to cause stress among animals the same way as it does on humans. The research paper published in the journal Current Biology unveiled that bears were unsettled due to the presence of drones.
An experiment was carried out by the researchers from the University of Minnesota. In it, they used 'biobloggers', devices that track heart rate, to know the stress level faced by bears. The researchers came to know that the presence of drones was related to increased heart rates among bears by as much as 123 beats per minute.
Earlier as well, there have been instances where drones were reported to disturb wildlife. To cite an example, in 2014, the US National Park Service has banned the public use of drones within park boundaries after a drone led a herd of sheep in Utah's Zion National Park to scatter.
It is expected that the study results will help authorities concerned about the negative side of drones because it is quite recent that the use of drones have been included. In the next part of research, the study authors will find out at which distance different animals respond to drones.
