Dolphin Dies despite Efforts by Marine Officials
A dolphin that was recently spotted in a central New Jersey waterway has died despite several efforts made by Marine officials to coax away the creature from the central New Jersey waterway.
As per officials, the bottlenose dolphin was first spotted on Wednesday in the South River, near Old Matawan Road, in Old Bridge. Later on Thursday workers from the Raritan Riverkeeper organization made several attempts to push and guide the stranded dolphin so that it could escape towards the ocean.
Attempts made by the officials failed and the mammal died on Saturday. The dolphin attracted a lot of local residents who gathered in flock alongside the river to watch the mammal.
The volunteer who were involve in rescuing the creature said they hoped that the dolphin would swim back to the ocean with high tide, but it could not. The river was located roughly ten miles from the ocean, they said.
Sentinel Republic reported that on Saturday, the officials tried to rescue the dolphin when they saw the dolphin was having a seizure and struggling. They made several efforts to pull the dolphin from the river to take it to a veterinarian, but the mammal died on the way.
Bob Schoelkopf, the centre's director, said in a statement that the dolphin appeared to be quite old and weighed around 400 pounds. A necropsy will be performed on the dolphin to ascertain the cause of its death, said Schoelkopf.
