Cornell University’s Website offers help to Identify North America Birds
Cornell University has created a new website in collaboration with the Visipedia research project, urging birdwatchers in North America to upload the photo of birds to identify 400 of the most frequently occurring birds of North America. The website has been created with the intention to make it easier for birdwatchers to find out bird species. The website can easily identify the bird's species only through the photo.
Some sophisticated artificial intelligence magic will enable the website to identify birds from photos uploaded by users. But users need to upload pictures of species that's found in the United States and Canada.
The website requires a user to upload the photo and draw a box around the bird along with clicking on its tail, beak and eye. They also must provide the details of the pictures like where and when the picture was taken. This is all needed to be done on the users' part; rest will be taken care by the website itself.
The website is being designed to look through countless pictures taken by other birdwatchers and over 70 million images found on eBird. org. This enables the website to identify the one that flawlessly matches that of the user.
Jonathan Franzen author of the acclaimed novel The Corrections said, "I'm making up for lost time and spending the second half of my life as a bird-watcher".
Merlin Bird Photo ID is the name being given to the website, which also shows photos and plays songs of various bird species.
