Climate Change: A Long Unresolved Issue

Climate change issue has been a hot topic of discussion among climate scientists, policy experts, and politicians for quite some time as we recently passed 400 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere. If nothing is done to curb carbon emissions in the atmosphere, the level will rise to 1,000 ppm, meaning a rise of between 3.2 and 5.4 degrees Celsius in global average temperature.

A 2012 World Bank Report had clearly stated that the current trend of carbon emission will bring extreme heat-waves and cause significant decline in global food stocks, loss of ecosystems and biodiversity. Sea level rise is another threat posed by global warming; people residing in coastal areas might need to migrate to safer places as their grounds may go under water.

Great efforts and coordination are required to hold temperature down under 2°C. However, this has not been happening currently, neither had it happened in the past. But, now is the high time for governments and corporate to realize their responsibility in dealing with climate change by reducing the reliance on fossils fuels for energy production.

It seems that politicians want to have ways to mitigate climate change that do not require cuts in carbon emission. Some scientists have also showed that it is possible to capture carbon before it settles in the atmosphere. But there is a need to understand that global warming should be contained before it’s too late.

According to IPCC, there is a need to remove between 2 and 10 gigatons of CO2 a year from the atmosphere by 2050. Otherwise, negative effects of carbon emissions, in form of global warming, would wreak havoc on earth.

Also, there is no assurance that the technique to remove carbon from earth’s atmosphere is really a good candidate for the purpose.
