Chandni Chowk… Crashes All Bollywood Hopes; Earns Rs 33 Cr In First Week!
Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Chandni Chowk to China’ (CCTC) is not raking in big money as compared to his last release (2008) ‘Singh is Kinng’, which earned Rs 595 million through out the world.
CCTC grossed Rs 33 crore, which was far less than ‘Singh is Kinng’, during the first week. The movie earned Rs 30 crore from Indian market and the remaining (Rs 3 crore) from abroad market.
Film’s co-producer Warner Brothers anticipated the movie to gross Rs 100 crore, which includes ticket income from overseas markets.
According to reports, Chandni Chowk To China, produced by Warner Brothers and Ramesh Sippy, was produced at a cost of more than Rs 80 crore, including marketing costs.
CCTC got the widest release for a Bollywood movie, releasing in more than 135 screens in over 50 markets in North America.
But the operators of multiplexes stated that they were not happy with the response. They said that there was a decline in occupancy levels and advanced bookings by Monday.
A senior executive with a leading cinema chain said, “The movie is comparable to SRK’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, but cannot be compared with the success of Singh is Kinng and Ghajini at the domestic box office.”
Mr. Shashank Raizada, president of National Association of Motion Picture Exhibitors, said that the film producers may have earned Rs 33 crore in revenues.
“There are minimum guarantees that distributors take from some cinemas. Also, the film did decent business in the past weekend, with 80-90% occupancies in most cinemas,” he said.
In 2008, Singh is Kinng made an estimated Rs 45 crore on the domestic box office in the opening weekend, whereas Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi grossed Rs 60 crore in just three days worldwide.
