Central Oregon Lake Slowly Disappearing

It has been reported that a central Oregon lake is slowly disappearing and is going down in the drain. Experts said the water body aptly named 'Lost Lake' in Oregon gets filled up every winter and then drains like a bath tub as a 6ft-wide hole opens up. This natural phenomenon causes Lost Lake to turn into a meadow in summers, they said.

Jude McHugh, a spokeswoman for the Willamette National Forest said Lost Lake's water tumbles down the tube and refills the underground water supply that fills the springs in other areas of the forest.

Officials said the lake is gradually draining all the time but as there is less rain in summer to replenish the lost water it becomes completely dry.

The water travels through porous volcanic rock underground and into an aquifer before emerging at nearby springs.

The Bend Bulletin even showed a video of the Lost Lake dropping into a hole known as a lava tube. It also reported that the water drains down the lava tube on a seasonal cycle.

Some people have actually tried to plug the drain holes. Car parts and other debris have been discovered in the Lost Lake hole, Forest Service workers said.

Ms. McHugh said, "If anyone was ever successful at plugging it, which we're not sure they could do, it would just result in the lake flooding, and the road".

According to the U. S. Geological Survey, lava tubes get created when volcanic lava hardens on the outside, but continues to flow on the interior. The process forms a tunnel-like structure when it cools and the lava ceases.

The Bulletin reported it is unknown when the lake water disappears, but it likely re-enters the groundwater system.
