Islamabad, Feb. 26 : Pakistan's Supreme Court used verdicts of past cases to arrive at its ruling to disqualify the Sharif brothers from contesting elections.

Sharif's conviction in the Plane Hijacking Case and Helicopter Case were the primary reasons for his disqualification, The Nations reports.

Sharif was awarded life imprisonment after he was convicted for trying to hijack the aircraft of the then Army chief General Pervez Musharraf on October 12, 1999.

A case was registered against Sharif and his brother Shabaz Sharif alongwith the then Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Ghous Ali Shah, the then Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh Rana Maqbool and the then Chairman, Pakistan International Airlines Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Later, all accused were acquitted, except Sharif.

In the Helicopter case, the court convicted Sharif for tax evasion for not mentioning the use of a helicopter during his election campaigns.

He was awarded a 14 years jail term, and barred from holding any public post.

The court also ordered Sharif to pay a penalty of 20 million rupees. (ANI)
