California Governor Jerry Brown to Travel to Vatican City Later This Month
Governor of California Jerry Brown on Thursday made an announcement that he will be travelling to Vatican City later this month to have a discussion on climate change and modern slavery with Pope Francis.
Jerry Brown who wants to burnish his legacy as a climate change activist has planned to attend a two-day event starting on July 21. The event is hosted by the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences.
Brown, a former Jesuit seminarian, said the major focus of his visit will be to discuss two issues that are very well highlighted in pope’s recent teaching document, called an encyclical.
Pope in his encyclical chastised international lawmakers for not adopting effective, long-term policies that would help save the environment and assist those who suffer the major effect from global warming.
Brown said, “In the spirit of the pope's encyclical, this unprecedented gathering of global leaders is a wake-up call to face up to the common threats of climate change and human exploitation”.
The statement came after his recent address to the Climate Summit of the Americas in Toronto, Canada. Brown warned that the world is on a collision course with fossil fuels.
In addition, a Brown-sponsored bill pending in the state Legislature would set the most aggressive carbon reduction benchmark in North America.
California aims to improve statewide renewable electricity use to 50 %, reduce the use of gasoline and make buildings highly efficient.
A statement released by the governor's office told that the Vatican event will be attended by the pope, representatives of the United Nations and mayors and governors from all around the world.
