The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Delhi has reduced fatal accidents on the stretch to 'nil', increased travel time for all vehicles by 19 per cent compared to last year and cut down Delhi's combined carbon footprint to a large extent.

This is what a group of journalists from across India learned at a workshop at CMS Vatavaran Film Festival on Environment and Wildlife on Day three on Thursday.

The workshop aimed to inform journalists from Indore, Ahmedabad, Pune, etc of the real benefits of the BRT system — often criticized in Delhi for being too biased towards buses, causing congestion for private vehicles — as a tool to mitigate carbon emission.

“It is a system that discourages people from using private vehicles,” said Prof. Geetam Tewari from Transport Research and Injury Prevention Programme of IIT Delhi, the designers of the BRT system.

With Climate Change and Sustainable Technologies its theme, the festival has given a lot of space to the BRT system. A film on BRT in 12 cities by Faizan Jawed and Ashok Mundkur called Just Wheels is also being screened.
