Brontosaurus is back after over a Century
1903, researchers said that there was not enough evidence which could prove that Brontosaurus ever existed. But a new study suggested that Brontosaurus, which was once the most famous dinosaurs, should be reinstated as their genus among dinosaurs. According to the study, the animal was real and lived on earth a long time ago.
More than a century ago, researchers found that anatomical differences between Brontosaurus and Apatosaurus were minor and the two could not be combined in a single genus. That time, the researchers decided that Apatosaurus will be considered as the older classification, and the Brontosaurus name was nullified by the researchers.
Species of dinosaur were found during 1870s, including the two long-necked sauropods. Dr. Thomas Adams, the curator of paleontology and geology at the Witte Museum, said that as Apatosaurus was named first, Brontosaurus was neglected by the researchers at that time.
The new study, which was released on Tuesday, has been compiled over five years. Authors of the study, Emanuel Tschopp, Octavio Mateus, and Roger B. J. Benson, found that the researchers in 1903, who rejected Brontosaurus, were wrong about the animal.
After reading the report, Adams said that Brontosaurus was very different from Apatosaurus. According to Adams, the new study has provided enough evidence to prove that the animal was very different from Apatosaurus. The study has compared the two Sauropods part by part, as per Adams.
Adams said, "They took about 477 different anatomical features and compared them across 81 different animals. This is a really good lesson for us to go back and not just take everything as word and go back and do our own analysis".
The study has suggested that there is need to rediscover the giant that once walked the plant about 150 million years ago.
