British Woman withdraws her name from One-Way Trip to Mars
A 24 year-old British woman has been pulled out of a one-way mission to Mars after she said that she wants to give birth to the first alien baby.
Maggie Lieu, an astrophysics PhD student made it to the final 100 shortlisted applicants from over 200,000 initial applicants to make one-way trip to the Red Planet as part of a project termed as Mars One.
She was being tested, along with other successful applicants before a final 40 are chosen to make the $6billion journey. The test was conducted to witness how the applicants would cope in the harsh environment of Mars.
She studies at the University of Birmingham and was one of five Britons shortlisted to make the 140 million mile one-way trip.
The other four other British candidates selected from a pool of 660 candidates after participating in personal online interviews are two science students, a laboratory technician and a self-confessed adrenaline junkie.
Hannah Earnshaw, 23, Ryan MacDonald, 21, Alison Rigby, 35, and Clare Weedon, 27, are still involved in the mission.
Lieu announced her withdrawal from the mission last week on Twitter. However, she has not revealed the reasons behind her decision.
She wrote, “You should probably know that I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Mars One program. Still I wish them the best of luck”.
She added that she truly feels honored to have been picked as part of Mars One’s final 100 candidates. She will continue with her public engagement and outreach activities, which she is extremely passionate about.
