Boeing Co. to build commercial Russian-Ukrainian plane
U. S. aircraft maker Boeing Co. may win a contract to assemble a Russian-Ukrainian plane for the commercial market, Government officials in Russia have said.
RIA Novosti reported on Friday that Alexei Fyodorov, head of United Aircraft Corp., said Russian and U. S. government officials had discussed the idea. It is also on the agenda for discussions during President Dmitry Medvedev's June visit to Washington.
It has been reported that the plane in question is the An-124 Condor, a transport plane designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in 1982. It was assembled in Ukraine and Russia until1995.
Although no An-124 Condor planes are now in production, industry leaders in Ukraine have criticized the plan, which would take work and profits away from Ukrainians.
RIA Novosti has said that commercial use of the $250 million plane is limited and it would take a sizable production run to make it profitable. (With Inputs from Agencies)
