Boaters alerted about Presence of Massive number of whales off Marin Coast
A research team has seen more than 100 blue whales off the Marin coast. They have asked boaters navigating coastal waters to adopt extreme precautions. Researchers said that it is not a problem that these whales are jumping, as it a normal behavior of them.
It is just the fact that their number is more than what is normally seen there. This heavy traffic could prove dangerous for boaters, especially those on small boats.
Maria Brown of Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary said in comparison to humans, threat level is more for the whales. The researchers said that in an hour, they have seen 115 endangered whales.
Boaters have been advised to stay at least 300 feet away from whales. Roger Thomas, 80, a veteran of the region, said he has never seen so many whales before. He has termed the number 'unbelievable'.
As per the experts, main reason behind hanging out in such massive number around the area is an increased food supply. Nan Sincero, of the Oceanic Society, said it will be interesting to see for how long the warning persists and till when the whales remain in the region.
Experts do not think it is going to happen any time soon and could take a few weeks and might a month. Federal officials said they have warned operators of small boats and larger ones.
