Blue Moon to occur on July 31

On July 1 at 10:20 pm CDT, the first of two full moons of this month appeared and later this month, the second full moon will also appear. According to reports, the full moon that occurs in July is usually called the Buck Moon, the Hay Moon, or even the Thunder Moon referring to stormy weather.

The Buck moon name is given to this full moon since usually July is the month, during which the new antlers of buck deer come out of their foreheads in coatings of fur.

The most common names of the full moon are after the Algonquin Native American that lived in the area of New England and westward to Lake Superior. It is said the Algonquin tribes were having large impact on the early European settlers in America, and the settlers also started naming the moons like the Native Americans. They also came up with some of their own names.

As per the volcanologist Scott Rowland of the University of Hawaii, this phenomenon also led the sun to appear lavender, when it comes to its color and precipitated "such vivid red sunsets that fire engines were called out in New York, Poughkeepsie, and New Haven to quench the apparent conflagration". As per reports, on July 31 at 5:43 am CDT, the second full moon of this month will appear.

The second is usually mentioned as a Blue Moon when two full moons arise within one month.

As per Jim Todd, space and science education director for Portland's Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, generally, a blue moon is called a second full moon in a month.
